Adobe no longer offers pay-once versions of any of their software anymore and even microsoft is trying to get private office customers into their Office 365 subscription model. But keep in mind that's how most "bigger" software packages work these days. Whether you need these features and if they are of any worth to you, is a completely different thing and you'll have to decide that for yourself. The subscription model might make the software more expensive to you, but with major feature addons (FLAC and AAC support, Cloud Backup) it's definitely worth the price. No idea what Spacial changed exactly or why Windows doesn't support stuff that worked flawlessly on Win7 anymore while supporting way older mechanisms. But at some point in the 4.x series they changed some general background stuff and that worked well for Windows 7, but is not covered by Windows 8 compatibility stuff. In very old 4.x versions the software was built in a way that works well with the Windows 8 compatibility layer for supporting software made for older Windows versions. It's known that SAM 4.9.8 will NOT work on Windows 8 due to changes in the software architecture that happened during the 4.x series. SAM 4.9.8 will work until forever, but will not receive support anymore, besides activation issues.
